SHAVING KIT



A clean shave was a matter of life and death for the Great War Doughboy. Facial hair would have hindered the fit of the gas mask causing it not to form a tight seal. This is one of many styles issued. Several styles were also sold commercially. Not shown in this view is the mirror that is part of this kit. It slides into a pocket that is behind all the items shown in this kit.

WATCHES

Watches were a required and necessary item for officers and most N.C.O.s. The need to reference the time quickly led to the proliferation of wrist watches during the Great War. Most wrist watches were produced from ladies pendant watches The LEONARD watch below is an example of this modification. Because these watches were bulky and and the crystals shattered easily many watchbands incorperated a leather or an open metal grid cover (shown in the two examples to the right) to protect the watch.
